KILSYTH boxers are celebrating after taking home medals at a national competition which was held at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility on Saturday, February 16.

Three youngsters at the Kilsyth Golden Gloves Boxing Club competed in the West of Scotland Youth Championships.

Lewis Johnston (12) won gold at the event after beating his opponent from Coatbridge’s Barn Boxing Club in the 52 kilos weight category.

A silver medal was awarded to 15-year-old Mark Shillinglaw in a fight which was dubbed the best of the day.

Mark, who weighs 38 kilos, narrowly lost out on the top medal on points to a boxer who is three kilos heavier than him.

The club’s Lee Fearns (17) made a welcome return to the ring after 10 months out dealing with a crucial ligament injury.

He, however, lost out his fight on points despite putting on a good display.

The club will turn its attention to senior fighters who will travel to Edinburgh’s Meadowbank Stadium on Saturday, February 23.

Bryce Stewart, Derek Skinner and Lee Fearns will all be competing for the Scottish senior titles.
