Olympic role ‘medals’ will be honoured in East Dunbartonshire

In the pool, Michael Jamieson won silver in the 200m breaststroke, setting a British record.

The Robroyston swimmer trained at Bishopbriggs Leisuredrome and was a member of Scotia Swimming Club.

Meanwhile, Katherine Grainger – from East Dunbartonshire – struck gold in the double sculls rowing event with her partner Anna Watkins.

And on a separate note Turner Prize-winning artist Martin Creed, a former pupil of Lenzie Academy, was responsible for organising the nationwide bell-ringing event which heralded the start of the Olympic Games on July 27.

His work ‘All the Bells’ was hugely successful and was recognised as an innovative and creative way to get communities involved.

Provost Una Walker said: “The theme of the Olympics was ‘to inspire a generation’ and I think it’s safe to say that this team of wonderful athletes have certainly done that.

“For a small area like East Dunbartonshire to produce two Olympic medallists is fantastic.

“On behalf of everyone at the council, I’d like to congratulate Michael and Katherine on their success.

“They are wonderful ambassadors for their schools and for East Dunbartonshire, as well as being excellent examples of what can be achieved with hard work and determination.

“Once the dust has settled I think it would be appropriate for the council to honour our Olympians so I will be happy to host an event to celebrate their success.”
