Government launches winter ready campaign

A NATIONAL campaign launches this week urging Scots to prepare for the coming winter.

According to research, 44 per cent of people say they feel prepared for severe weather — but the Ready for Winter campaign aims to up that number by setting out steps to take at home, in the car, at work or in the community.

Minister for transport Keith Brown said: “While we can’t stop the weather causing disruption, we can be well prepared to deal with it.

“As we have seen, severe weather can strike quickly and at any time of year.

“The weather can cause a range of problems but we can be ready for them. Whether it’s making your home energy efficient, protecting your pipes, packing an emergency kit for the car of looking out for vulnerable neighbours, we can all play our part.”

Advice on how to prepare yourself is available at www.readyscotland.org.

Glasgow and East Renfrewshire councils have dedicated space on their websites for winter maintenance plans, including maps of your nearest grit bins, gritting routes and emergency contacts.

Scotland has been affected by severe winter weather for the past four years, and national headlines have this month predicted the ‘worst winter for decades’.

However, a spokesman for the Met Office has responded: “There is no indication of what we can expect over the next four months — it is far too early to tell.”
