Referees seek new members

AS THE new season gets underway, Lanarkshire Referees’ Association is encouraging football fans to take up the challenge of becoming a referee.

The new entrants classes get underway on Monday, August 29, at Strathclyde Hilton Hotel, Bellshill, with a 7pm kick off. The classes will run for eight weeks and culminate in a laws of the game exam.

Anyone, male or female, can join the association, as long as they are 16 years of age. Every referee who passes the exam then officiates a match under supervision, before being put into an appropriate local league to maximise their development.

Euan Norris, association president and himself a category 1/FIFA referee, said: “Refereeing today offers a fantastic career opportunity. We have young referees coming through the ranks with a bright future ahead of them.”

For further information on becoming a referee, or to register your interest for the next class contact secretary Jim McCunnie by email at jmccunnie@bissettprinters.co.uk or on 07801 532446. You can also visit the website at www.sfar-lanarkshire.org.uk.
