All set for the big event

The build-up to the Commonwealth Games is about to enter an exciting new phase with the start of the countdown to red letter day Wednesday, June 23.

That’s when the Queen’s baton relay visits Cumbernauld and Twechar, amid scenes likely to echo the unforgettable arrival of the Olympic torch in Cumbernauld.

Meanwhile preparations are said to be progressing well in nearby Strathclyde Park for the Games’ triathlon events, and the route of the cycling time trial has been announced.

But the first evidence that something big is happening in the area has been the appearance of the 2014 logo on road signs and council vehicles and facilities.

The signage is part of North Lanarkshire Council’s effort to create a positive impression for athletes, spectators and visitors.

Councillor Helen McKenna, convener of environmental services, said: “We are proud to host the triathlon and cycling time trial, and are expecting thousands of visitors on the competition days.”

“That’s a great opportunity for local businesses and we’re working with them to prepare for the impact.

“For residents, there will be free sports and cultural events happening around the sports events, giving everyone a chance to join in the excitement of the days.”

A main aim is to leave the area the lasting legacy of an increased interest in sport among people of all ages.
