Community play to take to the stage

THE curtain is set to rise on Cumbernauld's biggest event of the year later this week.

Cast and crew will take to the stage for Stitch 'n' Time, Cumbernauld's community play for 2010.

The show runs from Friday, (June 18) to Saturday, June 26, with curtains up at Cumbernauld Theatre at 8pm.

Written by local artist and playwright Brian Miller, Stitch 'n' Time, is a wonderful piece of community theatre for all the family to enjoy with lots of time travel, ghosts and even Elvis. You'll be guaranteed an amazingly entertaining night out.

It's an exciting and unique show that's packed full of humour, songs and a fantastic storyline.

'Stitch 'n' Time' is afantastic, exciting, dynamic project that involves over 100 people in all aspects of putting on a show - acting, designing, filming, building sets, making costumes and lots more.

It's an exciting, creative project with people of all ages and experiences working together, building the community and in telling the history ofthe town.

Stitch 'n' Time is the fourth Community Play that Brian has written and had performed at Cumbernauld Theatre.

He has won countless awards for his writing, poetry, artwork and design and is well known as a local artist and playwright in the town.

A Cumbernauld Theatre spokesperson said: "Brian's devotion to the arts and the community is astounding. I'm sure that members of the community would agree that he should be recognised for his contributions to the arts in a more official capacity."

The play is set on Hallowe'en night when ghosts come out andall manner of strangethings can happen.

Zara's walking home from celebrating her 16th birthday when a rip in the space/time continuum brings Elvis to Cumbernauld. He's on a mission to save the Universe from the evil Professor Stagnant, so canZara help Elvis save the world, and Cumbernauld, from destruction?

The show has a double cast to allow more people to be involved, so youth theatre members Abby Trainer and Catherine Expsito are both playing Zara.

Abby said: "My favourite bit so far has been the group rehearsals as you get to see it all come together.

"I've made lots of new friends and I really liked the singing workshop as we got taught how to breathe and sing correctly.

Catherine added: "There's a real sense of community spirit and everyone gets a real chance to shine.

"I've got a better understanding of the theatre and I've found it really interesting going from a youth theatre member in your own age group, to working with a wide age range from eight to 86."
