Family drama and an escaped chicken stuff show

FOLLOWING on from the premiere of its touring production 'The Bookie', Cumbernauld Theatre is now preparing to host a play which is also set in a Scottish town.

Borderline Theatre members are bringing 'The Chooky Brae', by Daniel Jackson, the follow-up to 2008's 'The Wall' and last year's 'The Ducky'. A new show, it is set in the small Ayrshire town of Stewarton on Christmas Day.

Irene Gordon is struggling to get into the festive spirit. Her teenage daughter Norma has just had a baby, ex-hubby Gordon's had a stroke, and eldest son Barry is having a breakdown.

Into all this doom and gloom steps Rab McGuire and an escaped chicken that won't be stuffed.

'The Chooky Brae' represents the conclusion of a coming-of age comic trilogy centred around the character of Norma Gordon. The series has been well-received with critics particularly enjoying the "big speeches" which distinguish this from your run-of-the-mill kitchen-sink comedy drama.

The play is directed by award-winning director and designer Kenny Miller, whose recent credits include 'The Seagull', 'Company Policy' and 'Romeo and Juliet' for Oran Mor.

He also recently worked for Cumbernauld Theatre as the designer for no other show than the aforementioned 'The Bookie'.

The show's cast includes Sally Reid, Anita Vetesse, Stewart Porter, Scott Hoatson and Jordan Young.

The show is at Cumbernauld on Friday and Saturday, October 1 and 2. Both performances begin at 7.45pm.

On Friday, there will also be a post-show discussion with Kenny Miller and the cast.

Tickets are 10 each, with discounts for under-18s and Love the Arts members.
