Greenfaulds’ art triple triumph

Greenfaulds head teacher John May, centre, was delighted to congratulate the award-winning pupils and their teachers.

The art and design department of Greenfaulds High School has proved itself a powerhouse of creativity, with pupils winning the top prizes at this year’s Youth Arts and Literary Guild awards for North Lanarkshire.

Their memorable work was displayed at the Tudor Hotel, and last week was also on show in pride of place in Greenfaulds’ art department.

The S6 trio who scooped the top honours were Owen Scullion, who attends Glencryan but studies art at Greenfaulds; Erica Barnard, and Stewart Wallace.

All three are enthused by their work and have their sights set on future academic opportunities - leading to potential careers as diverse as professional model-making and games design.

Delighted head teacher Dr John May congratulated the three -and the teachers who make Greenfaulds’ art department such a stimulating environment for young artists.

Chartered art and design teacher Denise Corbett said: “Winning these awards is great news, as it gives the pupils’ work an excellent profile.

“Stewart and Erica certainly earned their honours, and Owen has produced work of an superb standard - his sculpture of ‘The Alien’, inspired by a trip to a museum in Switzerland wih his dad, is really something special.”

The Greenfaulds art stars are modest about their efforts, but clearly pleased to have scored a triple honour for the high school where they have worked so hard to develop such impressive skills.

They are clearly already preparing for the next stage in their artistic development, but will surely remember this year’s joint achievement as a defining moment in their careers - however these eventually develop.

Dr May spoke frankly about how pleased he is to see a thriving art department produce such a welter of talent.

“It is one very busy department, and the quality of the work these young people are capable of producing is very impressive,” he said.

The local success also allowed the school to stage the exhibition of entrants’ work at a local venue- giving Cumb ernauld and Kilsyth residents to enjoy seeing for themselves the stunning quality of the artwork produced at Greenfaulds High School.

The triple success marked the perfect opportunity to showcase sculpture and painting from young adults who are now fully geared to produce similarly impressive work in years to come.
