New exhibition puts focus on Cumbernauld

YOUNG artists from as far afield as Iceland will be converging on Cumbernauld as part of an ambitious architectural project which aims to show how the town's potential can be maximised.

All are postgraduate students from Edinburgh College of Art who have being taught by Cumbernauld artist Neville Rae - who has been at the helm of their five week-long research and development project.

They are inviting News readers along to a FREE symposium at the former Mackays premises on Forth Walk this Saturday (February 27) - where experts will come together and use Cumbernauld town centre as a starting point for discussion on the past, present and future of Cumbernauld.

But the project does not end there as the students will occupy the store plus numerous other vacant shop units within phases one and two of Cumbernauld town centre for a week-long period.

The work produced during the project will range from architectural drawings, models, sculpture, installation, painting, video, audio, text and performance.

Mr Rae who is a former pupil of Cumbernauld High School said: "This project has the capacity to develop a cultural renaissance for Cumbernauld town centre and Cumbernauld as a whole.

"It will bring new life and meaning to the vacant shops within the town centre, attracting a new audience, greater footfall and positive publicity to the are.

He added: "And it will also offer an exciting and alternative option to vacant shop units."
