New long distance trail takes in Kilsyth area

A NEW long distance walking trail, stretching from Dunbar to Loch Lomond, is to be routed through the Kelvin Valley.

The route is to be named the John Muir Trail after the Scot who led the National Park movement in America more than 100 years ago.

Scottish Natural Heritage are promoting the footpath, and it is hoped its construction will be complete by 2014 to mark a century since Muir’s death.

Kilsyth-based outdoor group, Friends of the Kelvin Valley Park, think the path will be great news for the area.

Secretary Paul Carter said: “We are delighted Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) have chosen the Kelvin Valley, out of many possible routes across central Scotland.

“We urged SNH to consider the Forth and Clyde Canal, the Antonine Wall and the Kilsyth Hills.

“They have now told us they will use the Antonine Wall for the main walking route, the canal for the cycle alternative and branch routes up into the hills.”

The path along the Antonine Wall is currently being given a major upgrade by North Lanarkshire Council.
