School of Rock aims to educate on climate change

THE Beatles once sang: 'You say you want a revolution, well you know we all want to change the world.' Now, it seems, that sentiment is very much alive and well in a group of much younger rockers.

Whitelees Primary School of Rock band have penned a song called 'We've Got to Believe', aimed at climate change sceptics who continually deny the environment is in danger.

This is the second track recorded by the youngsters. In 2007 they received written permission from John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono to perform a customised cover version of the late star's hit Imagine.

Head teacher Ann Kay is immensely proud of her young stars.

She said: "It's just fantastic. We've got global citizens in this school - they know that they can affect change, the small things can make a difference but we now need to take it further than that. It's the children who are going to suffer if we don't act to prevent damage to the environment."

The band is made up of children from primaries five to seven at the Abronhill school. They wrote the lyrics and music themselves with the help of primary seven teacher Tom Benham.

The track is just one part of the school's climate change roadshow which sees all classes set up stalls to show visitors what they are doing to save the planet and give information on how to help.

Primaries two and three have also designed a board game called Climatic which they will sell to raise money to improve their nature garden.

Two superheroes named Fairtrade Freddie and Fiona have been created by the Fairtrade committee and reusable carrier-bags bearing their image will be available to buy. Wildflower seeds will also be promoted for use in local gardens to support insect-life.

Ann added: "The kids here know climate change is going to be a big part of their lives and they want to know everything they can about it.

"They feel strongly that people have to understand what's happening.

"We would really like Scotland to take this on and think it could have a real impact."
