A special night with Robert Burns

Tak a cup o’kindness and support the Cumbernauld based Scottish Spina Bifida Association at their Community Burns Supper featuring spectacular live entertainment from the remarkable Drums n’ Roses.

This amazing and traditional event, which takes place at the Westerwood Hotel on Friday, January 30, 2015 and is hosted by Burns aficionado Graham Hill, will be the perfect night to come together and enjoy all things Burns; with good company, fantastic food, delectable drams and rousing verse.

Guests will be treated to a mouth-watering Scottish themed three course meal, accompanied by the very best of local speakers reciting some of Burns’ best loved works.

To round off the evening’s festivities there will be a Ceilidh Disco where you can dance until the wee small hours.

Dave Kennedy, Community Fundraising Officer of the SSBA, who is organising the event said: “It’s a great opportunity for you or your company to enjoy a fantastic evening of entertainment, take part in something special in the local community and support the Scottish Spina Bifida Association (SSBA), which is the only Scottish charity with a remit to help people with spina bifida & hydrocephalus in Scotland.”

He continued: “The money raised at this Burns Supper will help support over 3500 Scottish children, Scottish young adults and Scottish families affected by these conditions including 384 people right here in North Lanarkshire.”

Sadly, Scotland’s Central Belt has one of the highest concentrations of spina bifida in Europe, which is one of the world’s most common neural tube defects.

Dr Margo Whiteford, chairperson of the charity, who is also president of the International Federation of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, said: “Through your support we can fund projects such as ‘Positive Connections’, ‘Bring It On’ and ‘Be All You Can Be’ which importantly develop wellbeing, self-management of conditions and independence. These specific projects support children and young people aged 0-25 and their carers throughout Scotland.”

She added: “We receive less than one per cent of our income through statutory funding and need to raise one million pounds every year to fund our specialist support centre in Cumbernauld and its services.

“They are an essential lifeline for the Scottish families living with spina bifida and hydrocephalus – both of which cause complex, incurable and lifelong disabilities.”

Events like this enable the SSBA to fund projects that encourage everyone affected by Spina Bifida or hydrocephalus to be the best they can be in life.
