Theatre company takes off

A THEATRE company for people with learning disabilities has received a £5,000 lottery grant to make its productions bigger and better than before.

The group, 1 in 100 Theatre Company, was originally council-run, but for the past three years the company has operated as an independent organisation and is led by Kat Wilson.

Kat said: “This is the first time since 1 in 100 went independent that it has received lottery funding. The cash will help us buy props and costumes to enhance our productions and run outreach projects.”

The first production to benefit from this cash injection is Paper Planes, to be performed at Cumbernauld Theatre on April 1 and April 2 (7.45pm). The show, devised by the company themselves, is the story of Kevin, a young man intent on travelling to America in search of his childhood sweetheart, but to do so he must overcome his fear of flying. All 21 members of the company are involved in the production, which is directed by Katriona.

Once Paper Planes has finished its run bew members will be welcome to join the group which rehearses every Friday at the Link Community Education Centre in Cumbernauld.
