Planners have now placed the Town Vision document on the North Lanarkshire Council website as they originally intended to do in mid-December and are now now inviting residents and businesses to have their say over the next five weeks.

Some community groups have already been asked for feedback on the plans but now it is the turn of the men and women of Cumbernauld who have expressed strong feelings about the ‘megastructure’ and what lies beyond it for decades.

A total of eight town centres in the authority are involved including Kilsyth, which has plans for two new ‘town squares’ for example.

NLC’s head of Planning and Regeneration Pamela Humphries explained: “The way people use town centres has changed over time as a result of developments like online shopping and out-of-town outlets, so we need to identify a new future for our traditional town centres.

“Our vision is to use town centres for a variety of purposes, not just shopping.

"With more people living within town centres, they become busier during the day and evening, so we plan to encourage the conversion of existing unused building into housing as well as building new homes.”
