Community rallies round to help fire-ravaged club in Newarthill

The boxing club that was devastated by a fire last Monday (August 27) has been bombarded with cash pledges to the tune of more than £6,000.

Newarthill Boxing Club is hoping to re-build the ravaged premises through a JustGiving page and individual efforts of others.

This includes five year old Alfie Downie whose grandfather Wull is one of the coaches and has raised £2000 as he prepares to climb Tinto Hill.

And parents of young club members have also set up a fundraising committee, which are organising a sponsored cycle round Strathclyde Park on Sunday, August 22.

The club’s Brian McCluskey said: “The response we have had from the local Newarthill community and beyond has been overwhelming. These are indeed very difficult times for the club but the coaches, committee, boxers and parents are determined to go on and rebuild a stronger and better club.”
