Cumbernauld Asda ‘closure’ shock

Cumbernauld’s ever-busy Asda superstore was forced to close for around an hour on Thursday morning because of a till failure - leaving scores of shoppers fuming outside.

Police were called to ensure customers were shepherded from the premises without incident, as staff battled to remedy the computer failure.

One shopper, who asked not to be named, told the News: “I don’t know what the heck is happening - there’s a computer problem of some sort and we’ve all been told to leave.”

Staff offered complimentary sweeties to the shoppers huddled in the rain outside, while promising normal service would resume as possible.

Mothers with children who had been in the cafe were allowed to stay on until they had finished, and some shoppers were able to get messages through “one of two” operational tills.
At about 11.30am staff said they hoped to have systems up and running again “in about ten minutes”.

Around 150 people were waiting patiently for the store to reopen.
