Dynamic contingency plans are swinging into place this week as an army of volunteers does battle to stop loneliness and isolation for the town’s senior citizens.

For Cumbernauld Action Care for the Elderly (CACE) has got it covered and making special deliveries of cards and gifts to those it so ably looks after.

Many of course are the hardy band of ‘pioneers’ who were the new town’s first residents in places like Kildrum who made their own contribution to the growth of Cumbernauld in turn.

The charity is keeping in close touch with them to keep the Christmas spirit wholly intact and have applied a bit of creativity and, of course, social distancing to make it work.

Fundraising and communications manager Bronwen O’Riordan explained: “In place of our usual Christmas lunch at Castlecary Hotel, we have arranged for these meals to be delivered by our drivers to individuals’ homes.

“On Tuesday, December, 22 we have more than 30 members of our sporting memories group, each receiving a home delivered afternoon tea. This wonderful gesture has been donated by Cumbernauld Clyde FC who have arranged for our drivers to collect the tasty treats from the Westerwood Hotel.”

CACE will also play a key role in the Cumbernauld Resilience festive drive to deliver meals on Christmas Eve and Hogmanay. But crucially, the group is also looking to the future.

Bronwen said: “In January we will be sending out 200 activity packs for people to do at home, especially for those isolated indoors during winter. CACE will also be working on finding ways to bring our groups together virtually”
