The move comes despite the objections of local MP Gregg McClymont, who said the scheme would lead to a reduced service.

The Labour man said: “I want to thank all constituents who attended the public meeting on this issue and also the Communication Workers Union who joined me in the campaign to keep Cumbernauld’s major Post Office open on a stand-alone basis.

“That the Government – who after all are the owners of Post Office – would not intervene to protect this local landmark service is lamentable”.

The current Crown Post Office at 5/7 Clyde Walk closes on March 25, and the private enterprise replacement will open next morning.

Full details of this major development will appear in next week’s News.
