Five students from the construction pre-apprentice course joined the club’s president Bobby Johnstone and Danny Shearer, the college’s assistant head of faculty for Engineering, at the handover.

The well, which will gather funds for local charitable projects, is located on the first floor walkway that links the new and old sections of Cumbernauld’s town centre.

The Cumbernauld Wishing Well Project arose after the Rotarians approached the college assistant principal Tom Dodds to find out if students could build a wishing well.

Staff in the faculty worked collaboratively to deliver the project, which took three weeks to complete.

Joinery lecturer Robert McCulloch designed the timber frame for his students to build using recycled materials where possible; fabrication lecturer Derek Shearer manufactured the metal grille to keep monies secure; while students on the females into construction course applied the finishing coatings.

Danny Shearer said: “We were delighted to be able to assist the Rotary Club of Cumbernauld in their fundraising efforts.

“I’d particularly like to thank Robert McCulloch, who took a very rough idea and designed a lovely wishing well, which will hopefully help Rotary raise funds for good causes for many years to come.”

Student Helena Montague added: “Wreally enjoyed working on the wishing well, and we think it looks great in its final position in Cumbernauld Town Centre.”

Bobby said: “It is amazing to see the quality of the craftsmanship produced by the construction pre-apprentices.

“They are a credit to the College and their lecturers and I am sure they will go on to be great craftsmen and craftswomen in the future.

“Every penny raised by the wishing well will go towards local charities and good causes.”
