Heritage goes on display

Lanarkshire’s crowd-pulling Local and Family History Show on Saturday will feature more than 50 exhibitors and a galaxy of high profile speakers, as well as free events for children.

To be staged in Motherwell Theatre and Concert Hall the event follows the success of a similar show staged last August by Lanarkshire Family History Society.

Speakers are to include broadcaster and author Dr Fiona Watson, who will present some of her theories about the Battle of Bannockburn 1314, aiming to challenge many perceptions about this iconic event.

Dr Irene O’Brien, city archivist for Glasgow, will outline the resources available to family and local historians at the Mitchell Library, Scotland’s largest civic archive, and professional genealogist, lecturer and author, Chris Paton, will speak about Irish Resources for Family History.

Dr Bruce Durie, one of Scotland’s premier authorities on genealogy, will describe the use of Scottish heraldry in family history research.

Lanarkshire Yeomanry, the Lanarkshire Police Historical Society, Scottish Genealogy Society, Scottish Local History Forum, Scottish Monumental Inscriptions, Scottish DNA and the Universities of Strathclyde and Dundee will also be there.

Heritage groups from across Lanarkshire will display artefacts, photographs and other aspects of their research, and Culture NL will be exhibiting archives and family history material relating to North Lanarkshire.

The furthest travelled exhibitor will be Gary Pennington from British Columbia, with his Childhood Memories Project, in which he aims to gather stories about the games and adventures of childhood in days past.

Gary will also be giving a free talk about his worldwide project.

Children’s activities will include storytelling, face painting, hand loom weaving, hair braiding and a quiz, and the chance for youngsters to have photographs taken while dressed in historic costume or with an owl (additional charge).

Entry is £2, with talks costing £4 each or £14 for all four. Buying one or more talk tickets allows free entry to the show.

Children under 12 are admitted free with a paying adult.
