Kilsyth kids enjoy thesweet taste of success

There isn’t much these pupils at Kilsyth’s Balmalloch Primary don’t know about healthy food, after impressing an expert panel in a schools contest.

Children from primary schools throughout North Lanarkshire felt the heat as they presented their healthy eating advertising campaigns to a panel of experts in the ‘Dragon’s Lair’ contest.

The pupils presented their designs for an innovative advertising campaign promoting a new healthy Scottish food or drink product, with a special emphasis on the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Balmalloch’s imaginative entry was joint runner up - and a tasty testament to how well the Kilsyth children have learned key lessons about food and nutrition.

They wowed the judges with their Tasty Clyde Snack Boxes - theming the Games mascot to the sort of food visitors might enjoy at events.

The competition has been developed through a partnership of the Scottish Food and Drink Federation’s (SFDF) ‘A Future in Food’ programme, North Lanarkshire Learn in tandem with Learning and Leisure Services and food producers Warburtons, Brakes and Muller Wiseman.

Moira Stalker, SFDF Schools Programme Coordinator, said: “We’re incredibly excited to be working in partnership across Lanarkshire to get the Junior Dragon’s Lair Challenge into local schools.

“Not only do pupils get to learn more about our industry, it also gets them thinking about how food is made and the many exciting careers the Scottish food industry has to offer.”

Education officer David Craig said: “Our pupils have been encouraged to apply their knowledge of health and wellbeing and skills from a range of subjects to create and present an innovative marketing campaign.”
