As we reported last week, this will ideally incorporate local schools, a library, community centre and a surgery. The area had originally been earmarked for new housing but the plan was abandoned.

The two-phase project, which will regenerate the wider community at a later stage, was under the spotlight at the council’s Policy and Stratety Committee.

Convener of Enterpirse and Growth Cumbernauld, Councillor Allan Graham, said that the project was now welcoming feedback in a newly launched consultation.

Significantly it also wants to hear what Abronhill residents have to say about facilities in the heart of the area like the shopping centre.

He said: “Residents can play their part in supporting our plans. Informal consultations with school communities, partner organisations and the wider local community will take place with their feedback forming part of future proposals. To find out more about our plans go to our dedicated web page: https://northlanarkshire.gov.uk/vision.”
