New Greenfaulds ready to go on site

The deal will see the construction giant building a brand new school beside the existing run-down complex, which will then be destroyed in phases.

This will free up ground to be used for school sports pitches.

Cumbernauld and Kilsyth MSP Jamie Hepburn said: “I am of course glad to hear that the £30million funding which has been sourced from Scottish Government has reached financial close with the local authority’s contractors.

“I’m sure that all at the school are looking forward to the creation of a modern school building fit for the 21st century.”

The official launch of the project is expected to be carried out with a traditional sod-cutting ceremony by a Scottish Government minister before the end of the month.

Councillor Jim Logue, North Lanarkshire Council’s learning and leisure services convener, said: “We’re delighted that funding for this ambitious and exciting project has been agreed.

“It’s a complex process involving a range of partners – so it’s a major milestone that’s been reached.”

The Greenfaulds plans include an all-weather eight lane athletics track with associated field facilities in addition to synthetic sports pitches.

The heart of the main school building is a central space consisting of an imposing central hall, with social and dining facilities, and an internal courtyard.

These spaces have been designed to accommodate performance, drama, conference and social events.
