Beatson hospitalgets the go-ahead

A new cancer treatment hospital serving Cumbernauld and Kilsyth will begin construction in weeks, following Scottish Government approval.

The £22 million centre, which will be known as the Lanarkshire Beatson, is being built at Monklands Hospital to help meet rising demand for radiotherapy treatment over the next ten years.

Cabinet secretary for health and wellbeing Alex Neil said: “This is an important step forward, which will mean that more patients in the West of Scotland will be able to access the best possible treatment closer to home.

“This is very important as we drive home our message to Detect Cancer Early, get treatment and see more people continuing to survive this disease.

As a satellite of Glasgow’s famous Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, the new hospital will operate with the same state of the art technology and advanced equipment delivering the same world-class treatment as the Glasgow centre.

NHS Lanarkshire chief executive Ian Ross said: “This is an exciting development that will offer excellent premises for patients from across Lanarkshire and the west of Scotland. “
