Bield is looking forlocal befrienders

Volunteer Befrienders help tenants who feel isolated or unable to get out very easily on their own, offering one-to-one companionship.

Where possible they also help older people to maintain social contacts and feel more included in their community.

It’s a way of potentially making a big difference to the quality of life of someone who can no longer count on family or old friends.

One tenant said: “I have no relatives left and have outlived most of my old friends, so the befriending project has been very welcome.”

Bield spokeswoman Christine Dykes said: “We are looking to recruit Befrienders who would visit residents on a regular basis for a chat and a cup of tea, go out and about and enjoy local activities together.”

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our tenants who feel isolated or unable to get out on their own.

“Many would love to be able to do some of the activities they used to, and with the support of someone else this could be possible again.”

Enquiries are welcome from people of any age over 16 who can manage a minimum commitment of six months.

Volunteers are unpaid, but full training and support is given and basic out of pocket expenses are met.
