CCTV now necessity at centre

The level of criminal damage around Cumbernauld’s pioneering Craighalbert Centre is no so great that CCTV has now been installed.

Police are so concerned about the level of vandalism they approached Maplins Electronics in Westway Retail Park who kindly agreed to meet the cost of the cameras.

Sadly, the centre, which caters mainly for youngsters with Cerebral Palsy has gratefully accepted the gift because they feel they cannot secure the premises otherwise.

As we’ve reported, the centre borders a parkland which is a popular illicit drinking spot with local youth, resulting in antisocial behaviour such as vandalism.

Craighalbert’s administrative boss Lynn Harrison said: “We are delighted by the donation from Maplins and to Kennedy & Campbell for installing them.

“We would also wish to offer their thanks to PC Gunn and his colleagues from Police Scotland who have been hugely supportive and have done a great deal of work to patrol the Centre and surrounding area and facilitate the Centre gaining access to CCTV which we hope will discourage any future attacks.

“Local people have been incredibly generous in donating funds to repair the damage and this work is now almost complete thanks to the help of Alastair from GSN Landscapes.”

Ian McBeath of Maplins who lives in Seafar said: “It was my understanding that parents no longer felt that thei place was safe. We were only too glad to help.’’

Chief Inspector David Bruce said: “Some of the vandalism is disgraceful and community assets are being ruined. We’ll continue to target the area and officers will be charging any offenders detected.

“The CCTV will be used retrospectively to detect offences and it is not difficult to identify children and young people who get involved.”
