NHS Lanarkshire’s plans for newly approved vaccine

NHS Lanarkshire has responded to a request for an update in the process that is seeing the board area’s population vaccinated against Covid -19 - now that a new vaccine has been approved today (Wednesday)

The first vaccine was distributed to healthcare professionals with direct patient contact at Hairmyres Hospital on Tuesday, December 8

Health chiefs then said that the priority for vaccination would fall on residents and staff at care homes and over 80s.

It was stressed that these patient categories would continue to be targeted until February with the two-shot vaccine made by Pfizer BioNTech.

Now this newspaper has asked about plans to start utilising the Oxford Astra-Zeneca vaccine - the second vaccine to be approved.

This is cheaper than other vaccines and does not require to be kept at ultra low temperatures

A board spokesperson said : “We are awaiting further information on the availability of stocks of the Astra-Zeneca vaccine.

“However like most other boards, NHS Lanarkshire is working to have in place arrangements for our over 80s residents to be vaccinated as part of the first cohort.

“The Health and Social care partnerships and GP practices have been working together to identify appropriate staff and locations to deliver the vaccination as quickly and easily as possible.

“At present, approximately 80% of Lanarkshire GP practices have agreed to support the vaccination of our over 80s population.
