Safety fears over funfair in Cumbernauld

The Cumbernauld News received a host of complaints about the ongoing event on safety grounds amid claims that it would unavoidably spread the risk of infection at a point where Lanarkshire may have to go back into lockdown.

Among those who voiced fears was Cumbernauld’s Ruth Duffy who said: “The council thought it was a good idea to go ahead with this but Cumbernauld deserves better than this.”

However a council spokesperson said that operator Codona was running the rides under very strict conditions.

She added: “The funfair will only be operated where permitted by, and in accordance with, legislation, regulations, guidance and directions of the Scottish Government relative to the Covid-19 pandemic, whether relating to the protection of public health, restrictions of social gatherings, requirements for social distancing or otherwise.

“The Scottish Government took the decision to allow static and travelling funfairs to resume from August 24 subject to them following the relevant guidance.

“Police Scotland and the council will seek to ensure that all operators adhere to the provisions of the legislation and licence conditions.”

The funfair is based in Cumbernauld Centre’s car park. It stressed that it does not run the funfair and did not respond to our request for a comment.
