The Scottish people give a second wave of confidence to the government.

A survey has found that the majority of people in Scotland believe the Scottish Government can prevent a further outbreak of Covid-19.

The poll, which has more than 12,000 responses, shows 62 per cent of participants have confidence in Holyrood’s ability to prevent a second wave of the virus, while 38 per cent said they were not confident at all, or not very confident.

The survey also found that 85 per cent of those surveyed believed the message of “stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives” was clear and 65 per cent said these measures were appropriate, with four per cent saying they felt it was an overreaction.

The findings, gathered from April 17 to May 7, are preliminary results of a UK-wide survey which was launched last month by the University of Edinburgh’s Generation Scotland project.

So far, 14,500 people have participated in the CovidLife survey, which is funded by Wellcome.

The majority of respondents – 65 per cent – said the UK administrations’ responses were about right, while 32 per cent said they had under reacted and four per cent said there had been an overreaction.

The majority of respondents, 62 per cent in Scotland and 68 per cent in England, lacked confidence in the UK Government’s ability to prevent a second wave of the virus.

Further data on health and well-being and the social and  economic impact of lockdown will be released in weeks to come and shared with the UK and Scottish Governments, and future plans include a survey for 12 to 17 year olds and an investigation on how rural communities have been affected.

The lead investigator in this project, Professor David Porteous, said: “Our volunteers were markedly less confident in Westminster’s ability to prevent a second outbreak of COVID-10 than Holyrood’s.

“This was for the period when the UK-wide message was: ‘Stay at home; Protect the NHS; Save lives’. It will be very interesting to see how that level of confidence is affected now that Westminster has changed its message to ‘Stay alert; Control the virus; Save lives’.”

The survey is still live so any UK resident over 18 can take part by visiting www.covidlifesurvey.co.uk
