Indy group meeting on fracking

The session, at 7.30pm, is the group’s first event since the independence referendum, and seeks to explain what thev term “fracking” means – and why it is controversial.

The main speaker at the event will be Janet Moxley, an environmental scientist and green activist, who has worked on climate change and environmental regulation.

She as also involved with various pro-independence groups during the referendum campaign.

She argues fracking and other unconventional gas extraction is a serious threat to the environment, and that it brings little economic benefit compares to what are said to be more sustainable forms of energy.

Chairwoman for the event, Ann Balinger, said: “Residents in Cumbernauld are very concerned about fracking, and this will be an opportunity for those of us who are not scientists to obtain factual information and to understand the implications of the UK Government proposal.

Meanwhile Cumbernauld independent councillor Allan O’Brien says he has been told by Reach CSG it has no plans for drilling at any local site.

“But of course that does not amount to a guarantee,” he said.
