Motorists risking children’s health

Dozens of drivers are still flagrantly ignoring dire warnings about the dangers posed by petrol fumes to children, according to a council study.

South Lanarkshire Council environment officers examined conditions around local schools and dealt with 149 motorists whose cars were stationary with engines running.

North Lanarkshire Council, covering Cumbernauld and Kilsyth, also targets car pollution caused by idling - and can issue spot fines to offenders.

Children are more vulnerable to air pollution because they breathe 50 per cent more air per pound of body weight than adults.
