New aid to tackle food poverty scandal

Soaring levels of food poverty in areas including Cumbernauld and Kilsyth have sparked a council plan to give cash to food banks.

A council study, first revealed in the News, found that use of food banks has risen sharply since controversial welfare forms were brought in.

Now North Lanarkshire Council is to make available grants of up to £10,000 for large food bank operations and up to £2,000 for smaller ones, in a bid to help them cope with the demand.
