Medieval fun day at Duncarron a blast from the past

WHO said education couldn’t be fun?

Ask any of the youngsters who attended the Medieval Village Open Weekend at the Duncarron Fort recently and they will tell you otherwise.

Saturday and Sunday saw the Clanranald Trust’s Carron Valley project host its first educational event, and what a success it was.

Families packed into the full-scale replica fortified village to enjoy a trip back in time to experience the delights, and horrors, of historical life.

Inside the palisade there was a Medieval camp where refreshments were served, the food being cooked on a “21st century barbeque” however!

There was also a camp kitchen where visitors could try their hand at making bread in the primitive manner of the time.

A warriors display also took place where Clanranald members showed off the skills that have made them a hit on the big screen while many of the weapons used were also on show.

A blacksmith demonstrated traditional tools while a field hospital tent, complete with an axe-brandishing Medieval doctor, gave an insight into the grim medical care available at the time.

Kids were given the chance to try their hand at archery while there were also various other tents for tarrot reading, weaving and childrens’ games.

Margaret McEwan, a volunteer with the Clanranald Trust, helped to organise the day.

She said: “It went extremely well. The feedback we were getting from people was very positive and everyone had a really good time.”
