Cumbernauld Cottage Trust will now work towards gaining charity status and to commissioning feasibility studies to investigate the potential of community ownership and the building’s potential uses. The theatre, owned by North Lanarkshire Council, is currently leased to Cumbernauld Theatre Trust. Cumbernauld Cottage Trust has registered an interest in a community asset transfer once the building is declared surplus, which will ensure community ownership will take priority over any proposal for redevelopment and safeguards against potential demolition.

Adam Smith, trust chairman, said “We will be working to consult with the local community as part of the feasibility study process but we welcome anyone who is interested in the project or the future of the building to come along to our next meeting on Monday, September 3 in the theatre at 7pm.”
