Weather does deter the crowds flocking to Civic Week events

This year the Community Council arranged a new competiton, organised by Mae Shaw, to design and build a minature garden. Anyone who remembers the flower show will remember this. This was the first year but next year we hope to widen this out.

The night also saw the local children’s trivia quiz and this was won by Balmalloch Primary School closely followed by second place St. Patrick’s Primary and third was Holy Cross Primary.

On Friday Kilsyth Bowling Club were victorious over Kilsyth Miners’ Bowling Club in a tightly fought competion in less than pleasant weather.

Saturday was the street party and despite the miserable weather everyone seemed to enjoy themselves being entertained by the Kennedy Cup Cakes who also had some of the audience joining in. Paul the Butchers organised a barbecue which everyone enjoyed as well as his curry.

Best dressed shop window was won be Penworth Properties and tea and coffee was also available in this office.

Sunday saw an open air Gospel Concert take place at the Burngreen Bandstand.

The Civic Week raffle winners were: 1, Tom Dodds; 2, Jim Patrick; 3, Kim Hair. A full list of winners available on request.

The committee have so many people to thank for helping make the week a success. The local shops for taking adverts and donating raffle prizes, Jamie Hepburn MSP, Provost of North Lanarkshire Council and Councillor Jean Jones who also gave raffle prizes.

The civic party were treated to hospitaltiy wherever they went and again thanks for this.

To the many people who helped – too many to name individually – thanks to everyone, as without you we could not have managed.

Chairperson Katie McKenzie said: “It was great to see so many people attend the events no matter what the weather and without people coming along the week would not be such a great success. We can only organise the events but we need the community to participate.”
