40mph limit on stretch of M80 roadworks finally lifted

Speed restrictions on a busy stretch of motorway linking Glasgow and Stirling are to be lifted after more than two years.

A 40mph limit has been in place on the M80 and A80 from Haggs to Auchenkilns since January 2009, when roadworks began – but the speed limit in both directions will be set at 70mph on Friday.

The roadworks were part of the £320m M80 upgrade project, aimed at reducing journey times by up to 40 per cent. Yet the extensive work has frequently been the cause of massive tailbacks at peak times.

Central Scotland Police warned drivers that extra police patrols would be on the motorway on Friday to ensure traffic was flowing freely.

Chief Inspector Donald McMillan, head of the road policing unit, said: “I strongly urge motorists to take extra caution on this stretch of road as there may be people who drive at a slower speed because that is what they have been used to for so long.

“Just because the limit is 70mph does not mean that is the speed you must travel at - it is the maximum speed permitted.’’

A 40mph limit will remain in place on the northbound M73 after Auchenkilns as there are still roadworks there. The southbound stretch will be 70mph.
