Alert over “plausible” phone scam

A NUMBER of Kilsythians have been targeted by fraudsters running a ‘very plausible’ phone scam in an attempt to obtain their bank details.

THE News and Chronicle has been contacted by several residents who have reported receiving a call from a man claiming to be carrying out a survey on behalf of the Scottish Government.

The purpose of the inquiry is claimed to be to determine whether or not the recipient would qualify for a heating grant or free loft and cavity wall insulation.

The scammer is said to speak in a very calm and assured tone, and goes through the motions of asking what seems like a realistic set of questions.

Once complete, personal information is asked for, including bank account details.

One woman who was targeted by the hoax caller said: “It all sounded very plausible – saying he was from the Scottish Government carrying out a survey for heating grants and insulation, it’s believable at this time of year.”
