Andy races towards 100K

A Pollokshields man’s annual charity race is set to pass its ambitious six figure target.

Andy McAllister (39) is the man behind the Sally Challenge — a duathlon he started four years ago to pay tribute to his ill mother.

Sadly, Sally passed away in 2011, after a fight with bowel cancer.

Now, all funds raised from the event will go towards The Accord Hospice, which supported her during her final months.

Andy, who runs Glasgow fitness group Park Circuits, told The Extra: “At the first event, my mum started every challenger off and welcomed them at the finish line with a huge smile and a medal.

“She lived life to the full and she always put other people first.

“The Accord Hospice were an amazing source of strength before my mum passed away.

“That’s the big inspiration behind organising the event. It is my mum’s legacy.”

More than 100 fitness enthusiasts are set to take part in the event, which starts with a 13-mile cycle from Rowardennan Pier to Gartness, and ends with a nine mile run to Milngavie.

Dumbreck’s Michael Borthwick (24) is taking part alongside rugby team GHK.

He said; “It is an exciting challenge. I support the aim of giving back to a charity which does great work for those who aren’t able to get on a bike or go for a run.

“It gets people out exercising and enjoying our great city, which is something a lot of people don’t do.”

The event takes place on August 2, and places are filling up fast.

“Time is ticking before we have to stop accepting entrie, so that we can ensure all the logistics are the best for everyone to enjoy the challenge,” said Andy.

“If you are still contemplating entering, just remember to put others first.

People who attend the Accord Hospice need to go. Initially, they don’t really want to, but they go to get the support and caring they desperately need to help them get the most out of life.”
