Another keyroute closed

GREENFAULDS is a no-go area for traffic just a week after road diversions sealed off Seafar’s main thoroughfare.

The main road is closed to traffic as vital road resurfacing work gets underway.

Diversion routes have been marked along Greenfaulds Road and a free shuttle bus has been provided to transport locals from bus stops to Cumbernauld Town Centre.

It is understood that the work will have ceased by 5pm on Friday – and that North Lanarkshire Council was keen to attend to the job during school holidays when traffic at nearby schools was lighter.

David Smart, roads operations business manager, said: “It is necessary to close the road during resurfacing work to ensure the safety of the road maintenance staff and, most importantly, the safety of the public.

“We appreciate there is disruption to people in the area, but the work is necessary to ensure the road surface is maintained to a high standard which will not need further maintenance for a considerable time,” he added.

The roadworks have effectively put a temporary stop to normal bus services which link Cumbernauld with Glasgow and Falkirk.

A spokesperson for First Bus’ East division said: “We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause our customers however the closure is out with our control.’’
