This week in 1997

A PLACE of our own to meet and chat - that was Cumbernauld’s new day centre for senior citizens. The facility which operated in the Glen Lyon sheltered housing complex would provide a bite to eat, transport, companionship and even armchair aerobics! The centre was set up by Cumbernauld Action Care for the Elderly and was opened by Councillor Jim McKenna.

This week in 1987

TINY charmer Craig Sinclair toddled off with the prize that everyone wanted - after being named Cumbernauld’s bonniest baby in the Cumbernauld News. Although not yet two, Craig captured hearts with his smile but when it came time for his close up, he was more interested in our photographer’s camera than having his photograph taken. Baby Craig lived in Abronhill and proud mum Marie said: “I never thought he would win there are so many lovely youngsters around!’’

This week in 1977

YOUNG gymnasts took their show on the road and headed to Cumbernauld’s French twin town and received a standing ovation for their performance in a local sports centre. A 25 strong from Greenfaulds High School Gymnastics group travelled to Bron and wowed crowds with an amazing display which inspired cries of “Scotland Scotland!’ Ironically the group were supposed to be attending a tournament in Barcelona but this had been cancelled due to the unsettled political situation two years after the death of General Franco.

This week in 1972

A PUB wanted to supply carry-out meals but the plans looked set to be scrapped. Police objected to plans to alter part of The Twa Corbies amidst fears that young people would start hanging around the Carbrain watering hole and that this would be ‘‘undesirable’’. However, the owners Scottish & Newcastle Breweries insisted they were only following what was the latest trend for pub grub.
