1997

ONE hundred and twenty people gathered in Castlecary to protest against the proposed M80 upgrade that would force people out of their homes. Villagers and guest speakers congregated to show their opposition to the plans, hoping that a new government in the upcoming General Election would take notice and rethink the plans. Mr MacBeath, whose cottage faced demolition, said: “Hopefully a new government will take a fresh look at the whole situation.”

1987

CUMBERNAULD and Kilsyth MP Norman Hogg declared his support for civil servants, who were locked in a dispute with the Government over conditions in the civil and public services. In a statement, he said: “For too long civil servants have received shabby treatment at the hands of Mrs Thatcher.”

PETROL prices in Cumbernauld rose to 87p per gallon – a rise of 15p in just one year. Talk had been rife of it reaching the ‘dreaded £1’, and this was a step in that direction. However, despite the increase, petrol sales were not affected.

1972

SNP Councillor Dot McIntosh caused a shock in Cumbernauld’s 1972 local elections by winning the Kildrum seat, previously held by Labour leader Dr Alan Smith. Mrs McIntosh received a total of 858 votes - 70 more than Dr Smith and 675 more than the Conservative candidate in third.
