Armed cops in raid shock

ABRONHILL resembled the scene of a TV police drama on Sunday night as heavily armed officers and a search helicopter were deployed to the residential area.

Police, thought to have been armed with automatic weapons, converged on Spruce Road at around 9pm.

One eyewitness, who did not wish to be named, said: "I saw them in the square at Spruce Road.

"There were about six police, they all looked armed. They had a guy on the ground and their guns were pointed at him. It was like something out of The Bill.

"My daughter also saw them at the bus stop at Spruce Road around the same time, and we're sure the helicopter must have been in the area for at least an hour."

However, it would appear that the emergency was in fact a false alarm.

A 22-year-old man has been charged with making a malicious call to the police and was due to appear at Airdrie Sheriff Court on Tuesday.
