Army Alexmeets oldcomrades

OLD soldier Alex Alum from Carbrain was in London for two recent events commemorating military history.

Alex, who served as a driver in the Royal Scots Greys, took part in a combined cavalry parade and memorial service in Hyde Park on Sunday, May 8. Marking the 87th anniversary of the unveiling and dedication of the cavalry memorial, this service was organised by the Combined Cavalry Old Comrades and featured music by many different military bands. The service was conducted by Chaplain-General Stephen Robbins.

Alex also met the oldest living Scots Grey, Chelsea Pensioner Bill Cross (95), who joined the army at 15.

The following day, Monday May 9, is celebrated as Victory Day by the people of the former Soviet Union as it is the anniversary of the final surrender of the Nazis to the Soviet forces. Alex attended a ceremony at the Soviet War Memorial in Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park. This memorial, the only one of its kind in Britain, is dedicated to the estimated 27 million Soviet people who died in the war.

This event was attended by Russian Ambassador, Alexander Yakovenko, and ambassadors from all the CIS countries.

Said Alex: “It was humbling to be part of these ceremonies.”
