Planners at North Lanarkshire Council will consider a report on the planned layout of the site. Also, developers L&S Broadwood, who expect the development will bring 50 construction and a further 200 full time jobs to the area, are hoping they will be able to announce that a major food retailer has committed to moving in.

Aldi and Home Bargains have already signed up to the seven unit shopping parade in Westfield Road, not far from Broadwood Stadium.

The development will also feature a pub, a drive through restaurant or coffee shop, petrol station and 600 parking spaces.

A survey, which attracted 300 respondents, found that 97 per cent of local householders welcomed the prospect of new jobs, with 90 per cent pleased the plans were going ahead.

Bryan Wilson, Development Director at L&S Broadwood, said: “We already have planning permission for a retail development at Westfield.

“Now we very much hope that the members of the planning committee will deal with the outstanding matter which is approval of our proposed layout.

“We are committed to honouring all the conditions of the planning consent, including improvements to the local roads layout.

“We are very close to announcing that another iconic High Street food retailer wants to move in, and are in negotiations with interested parties for the remaining four units in the shopping parade, the pub, and the drive through restaurant.

“We hope the Planning Committee members will see that the time is right for this development and give us the go-ahead to a great shopping experience for the people of Westfield.”

The development will occupy a 12 acre brownfield site which has been empty for several years and is on the council’s “Vacant and Derelict” land register.

L&S Broadwood is a subsidiary of London and Scottish Investments, who own and operate Wardpark Industrial Estate.
