Binmen angeredby depot switch

A WRANGLE over the transfer of a key council department has ended in deadlock - after a top official refused to lay on transport to Coatbridge for binmen working unsocial hours.

Councillor Alan O’Brien was contacted by aggrieved bin men in his ward who are being pulled out of their base at Blairlinn to work at a new ‘superhub’.

The men – many of whom lack their own transport- have argued that the new arrangement will also add hours onto their working week.

Last week the Scottish Nationalist met with land services boss Kenneth Wilson who he has branded ‘‘unhelpful.’’

It’s also claimed that a member of his staff was unwilling to provide transport as this might give staff license to overindulge with alcohol the night before. The councillor said: “I just couldn’t believe it.’’The council has not denied this but would not be drawn any further on this remark.

Mr Wilson would only say:“Councillor O’Brien made a number of suggestions during our meeting. For various reasons, which I explained to him in full, none of these suggestions was workable.”
