Bogus callers warning from cops

Reports of bogus workers operating in this area have increased, police warn.

Householders should be extra vigilant because bogus workers may call on your home at anytime.

Cumernauld police constable Michael Duffy explained: “Bogus workers will usually offer you a service that you have not requested or do not require. Unfortunately any agreed price will tend to inflate and the work carried out will not be to the correct standards. These crooks will often ask for payment up front to buy materials only for them to disappear with the cash. They may also claim to be employed by the local authority, water board or local gas and electricity companies. They have also been known to pretend to work for the police.”

He added, “If you do receive that unexpected knock at the door then always treat it as a stranger until you are absolutely certain who the person is. Always use spy holes and door chains if you have them.”

Police also say genuine companies will usually make a prior appointment before attending at your home.

Trading Standards recommends the Construction Licensing Executive (CLE) to provide information on reputable, competent traders who meet strict quality standards. Based on where you live and what work you need done, CLE will give you a list of local companies who are members of their licensing scheme. This service is free and the work carried out is covered by a warranty scheme and a formal complaints procedure. To contact CLE call their freephone number 0800 092 1860 or go to www.constructionlicensing.co.uk.
