Boost for beekeepers

KELVIN Valley residents, community groups and schools have new opportunities to make a real difference in protecting their local environments and meeting the challenges of climate change.

Kelvin Valley Honey is a new initiative covering East Dunbartonshire and North Lanarkshire launched by a group of Kilsyth residents through Kilsyth Community Market Garden.

Individuals and organisations will have access to beekeeping training, loan of a bee hive, equipment, protective clothing, year-round support and a starter colony of honey bees – all for free.

Funded by Kelvin Valley Leader and the BIG Lottery's Awards for All programmes Kelvin Valley Honey aims to establish a minimum of 30 new beekeepers a year for the next five years.

Over this period the project will also establish Kelvin Valley Honey as a premier brand of quality Scottish natural produce. The brand will also be used to market a range of honey production by-products such as beeswax candles, furniture polish and honey based cosmetics to create a community owned and run rurally based social enterprise.
