Boxes of cheer for under privileged kids

STUDENTS will spread festive cheer to under privileged children in Eastern Europe by organising a shoebox collection.

The campaign was organised by those students on the Skills Development Scotland College Learning Programme.

They collected almost 100 shoeboxes, which are filled with toys, stationery, gloves, scarves and toiletries, for the charity Operation Christmas Child.

The charity will then send the shoeboxes to Belarus and Serbia to be handed out to children on Christmas Day.

Cumbernauld student, Samantha Brannigan, said: “This was a great campaign to be involved in. It’s extremely sad to think that there are children in the world that will wake up to no presents on Christmas Day so the work of Operation Christmas Child is so important.

“Everyone on the course was thrilled to take part and we hope the shoeboxes bring a smile to a child’s face this Christmas morning.”

Donations for the shoeboxes came from staff and students, Asda Cumbernauld and Tesco Cumbernauld, Kildrum and Camstradden primary schools.

Knitted goods were also provided by residents living in Hillcrest sheltered housing.

The campaign, which was started in 1990, is organised by the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child project.

To date 80 million children have received Christmas presents kindly donated by people across the world.

Learners on the college learning programmes have the opportunity to gain valuable skills, qualifications and work experience in their chosen career sector - Business Administration, Health Care, Hospitality and Retail.
