Building firm puts its Wates behind school project

WORKERS from a local building contractor went back to school for a day recently.

Wates Living Space are currently on site building 29 new homes for North Lanarkshire Council adjacent to St. Maurice’s High School and decided to assist the school as part of the company-wide Community Day initiative.

Wates Community Day is a national event organised by Wates Group where members of staff are released from their building sites and offices across the UK to deliver projects for charitable organisations in the Communities.

As part of this national volunteering scheme the North Road new build site team decided to upgrade the Cumbernauld school’s facilities due to the close proximity of the school to the site.

The project was to refurbish the existing lecture theatre within the school. The works included the removal of the existing benching and seating, new decoration of the room including some repairs to the ceiling. Wates were able to recycle all the timber benching and seating with the schools wood shop for next terms classes.

In line with company policy Wates have worked closely with head teacher Mr. Byrne over the course of the new build project and were happy to contribute in the refurbishment of the seminar room.

This year Wates participated in 112 Community Day Projects throughout the UK. In addition Wates Giving donated £22,500 to charitable organisations who we worked with on the day and an extra £5500 to Barnardos for those projects who were not able to receive a donation.

Headteacher Mr. Byrne said: “Wates have given up a considerable amount of their time to undertake these works. The attitude of the Wates team has been highly beneficial to everyone involved in the school. The children will benefit yet again from their generosity and we can’t thank them enough.”

Gillian Lavety, partnership manager for Wates, said: “Staff at the school was delighted when the team approached them to undertake the works as part of our annual community day. The company ethos is to give something back to the communities we are working in and help make a difference.”

Wates are currently on site in Cumbernauld opposite the school constructing 29 new build houses for North Lanarkshire Council as part of their new build housing framework.
