Burns Supper raises cash for Children in Need

A BURNS Supper organised by North Lanarkshire Council has raised thousands of pounds for Children in Need.

The 17th annual event was held on Friday, January 18, in the Civic Centre in Motherwell and a total of £3,765 was raised through a raffle and auction for the annual BBC charity appeal.

The Burns Supper, which is always one of the top social events in the North Lanarkshire calendar, was hosted by Provost Jim Robertson and sponsored by M&D’S Scotland’s Theme Park.

The traditional piping in of the haggis was performed by Cameron Strain from Airdrie Academy and Callum Cowan from Clyde Valley High who both perform for the North Lanarkshire schools pipe band.

The address to the haggis was performed by Mr Jim Kelly while council leader Jim McCabe gave the Selkirk Grace before the guests enjoyed a traditional burns menu of haggis, neeps and tatties.

Following the Loyal Toast from Sir Charles Gray, guests listened to Mr John Haining give the Immortal Memory and the Lament by Cameron Strain.

The Toast tae the Lassies was performed by Mr Bobby Dalziel and the Reply frae the lassies by Mrs Anne Fawbert.

The musical entertainment throughout the evening was performed by folk band Gaberlunzie.

Provost Robertson said: “The Burns Supper is an important tradition for millions of people throughout the world who regularly celebrate their Scottish heritage.

“It was an honour to host the event which raises so much money for such a worthwhile cause – the BBC’s Children in Need charity.

“I would like to thank all those who have helped to make this year’s event such a success, from the council staff to all the people who have donated raffle prizes, offer sponsorship or purchased a table at the event.

“The charity supports many fantastic projects throughout North Lanarkshire and makes a huge difference to the lives of some of our most vulnerable young people.”
